I said I was the only person at that timemy uncle gave me my sweet sixteen there, and all my friends were invited to come formal. So because it was done like the French did, I never had to pay tax, or only tax on a two-story house, instead of a three-story. And I would just would go around and Id just pick stuff up. I cant think of the name of the thing now. How the hell they got to the right people, I dont know. And I never had timesometimes Id be sleeping on the pool table there because I just couldnt leave! She was a nasty old lady! But that was funny. Burke: And what is a shame islike, you take [one of our former boarders], she has two horses that she used to keep here all the time. The son and his wife took over Scalamandr. And you would have been taxed in this country if it was already like that. And that was nothing but a little house that caught firewas just a little, little house. He spends time in every part of it. I had the best collection of the most beautiful carved ivory and things because they didnt have money but they would give you things. Things like that? And she wanted to start running things and taking things over. Burke: Greek revival. You know, he just passed away. George was a descendent of Thomas Luker and Unami Princess Ann Suncloud from the Turtle Clan of the Lenape Tribe, and very proud of his heritage and the land he was from.George was a humble man with a golden heart and a dry sense of humor. Burke: After I had the house, then I got the big pieces of furniture. Id love that old house. I said, But Bess, I said your houseI dont know about saving it. There were some gorgeous mansions. Oh, we were crabbing. Daller: Well, you got involved with Burkes Landing with Scalia. But, thats what I did. There was the main house, over here was the bar, over here was this big dining room, and this was the main house. But I was glad that I got this. The roof was shot because the old guy that was caretaker here, he used to walk around on the roof and watch all the boats in the harbor. And then, where they built the schoolwhat is that girls school up here? But that was a condo. Burke: Its never finished! But under that porch was the basement. Daller: From Michael and Jennifer, your nephew. It wasnt fair to him to keep paying for it. By the time I got to the to where they were discharging them and such, he had just been discharged and left on an airplane. She stated, George, I want you to save my house, and agreed to sell the house for a feasible sum in exchange for his promise to restore it. And then when we realized we were broke, all my brothers joined the military, got married, moved away. I saved it years and years ago. She said, Now you can save it., And I said, Well, I can save it. Burke: Down in the basement, my friend Eriche was great, with this Ouija board and all this stuffand he said, George, lets do a seance! So we got a bunch of people together and we went all down in the basement. Because back when they built the houses, kitchens were never built in the house.
